League of Useless Superpowers

So yeah. Time to 'fess up: I have a useless superpower.

No really, I do. And it's not being a "weirdness magnet", because that's really an innate quality - something that I am, not something that I do.

My preternatural talent (which is the preferred and politically correct term), is being able to tell you the time.... I mean without a watch, silly. ♥ Usually to within a 5 minute accuracy, too, though that improves markedly if: 1) I'm doing it fairly often like daily, and 2) I'm concentrating. When I stop and think about it, I can... don't know how to say this in a way that doesn't sound strange... I can "feel" how much time has gone past.

An example, if you'd like: Yesterday when Sher and I were traveling after the movie, we'd made a couple of stops and we'd just gotten into the car. The Echobo doesn't have a clock, since Twig's stick-on one fell off the dashboard. I looked over at her, and said, "We've been out a while. It's about 2:10... (pause) more like 2:15. We should be getting home."

Sher just gave me that look. The "Shyeah, smartass" one, and pulled out her cell phone. She watched as the time flipped to 2:15. SCORE!

*laughs* Please note that this talent has no application in the real world unless someone cares to use me as a human stopwatch. (No, I don't THINK so, ^^;;)

A friend of mine has a son with Aspergers syndrome who used to be able to do that, but for reasons unknown the power disappeared by mid-childhood. Karl and his mom have legendary weather witch powers; I always tell people that if you want to tour the area around Worldcon, find out if we're touring before or after the con. Sunny weather is guaranteed! The power is inoperative when we are driving or doing an inside activity, though. But it's so predictable that I don't pack an umbrella on trips anymore, which is why I got soaked when I was in Tokyo by myself!

I can picture you on the action/adventure/scifi show, the character that warns the Captain that we only have 18 more minutes to solve the problem that will blow up the ship. You will be there on the spot for the final second countdown, which will end precisely two seconds before detonation...

My darling husband reminds me that according to Captain Planet of childhood cartoon fame, "Heart" is also a superpower, and we know you have that one!
