It's white, it's wet, it's crumbly, it's of varying textures. No, you're not needing yet another trip to the gyne, you've just encountered tofu.

I wasn't nearly as versed and comfortable with this, until [livejournal.com profile] mewsgryphoncat spent a couple of years eating as a vegetarian. So now, whether I get it warm and fresh-made from the Lotus Food market, or prepackaged in water boxes, or cardboard cartons, I'm no longer intimidated by it.

I rarely get the warm-homemade version for two reasons: 1) is that transporting it home is a pain because it's so fragile, and 2) G-cat snarfs it like pudding when I turn my back. Also, I prefer my tofu to be more firm than silken. So - here are some things I've done with it so far:

Breakfast:

Tofu Scramble - Potatoes, onions and cubed tofu fried up with salt, pepper, butter, and a touch of paprika.

Panfried slices of tofu, on toast with a slice of cheese.

Lunch/Dinner:

Creamed spinach and tofu (served with rice)

Tofu and Black-bean Shepherd's Pie

Gen Tso's Tofu

Tofu and Vegetable Stir Fry

Sweet and Sour tofu

Rice, steamed with crumbled tofu and chopped onion (taught to me by Cris)

See?? Lots to do - and that's without letting G-cat eat it all for "dessert".

I love tofu as long as you're not trying to make it taste like meat. Just tofu with a little bit of soy sauce and wasabi is delicious!

So I suppose that I shouldn't suggest bringing your own snap n lock box for the Lotus foods tofu, huh?

...Can we get a little container for one square for me? I promise I'll stick with my Ranmune after that.

And just as an aside, I like the tofu scramble the best, and I could eat that quite happily for dinner too!

I love tofu to bits (if we ever go to Tokyo together, there's this tofu-only place in Roppongi that serves nothing but that!)

Love the ideas you have here, especially the breakfast ones - I've never thought of cooking tofu that way. We like to braise it here (either fried or casserole) which is great stuff too :D

Oh man... I would adore that. Such a junkie for the stuff. ^_^

It's been far too long since I explored new recipes like Tofu in peanut sauce, and others....

*has no experience with tofu*

Does it have a taste on its own?

Fresh tofu (made from soymilk) has very little smell and the taste is exceedingly mild, faintly nutty. (Which is the reason my girl makes "pleeeeeeease eyes" at me.) It's rather the chameleon of proteins, easily taking on the flavors of sauces and seasonings.

Mmmmm. Tofu.

I like pretty much any incarnation of it. Fried. Simmered. Stir Fried.... My mom even used to make it fresh herself. I probably never will as it's a mess to make and I don't have much use for the lees.

Somehow, I'm not surprised you have to fight the G-cat for it.

I may try something I recently saw for her: Get tofu while it's fresh and warm and scoop it like icecream into a bowl and top with a bit of brown sugar syrup.

I'm not even a huge tofu fan, and this post made me all hungry. Someday I will crash your pad and demand that you cook delicious things for me. (I gladly cook in return too, so no worries there.)
