Oh, the angsty!

Kyo associated her with the dawn and the way the blushing light crept softly over the horizon, pushing itself into the every corner of the world. He couldn't really help it, since that was the way Tohru had entered their lives - gentle, kind, soft-spoken. She was determined to pull her own weight, to be useful to all of them, so was it any wonder that eventually their lives began to revolve around her and her warmth?

But that wasn't where he belonged, not in the light and warmth of the break of day. He feared dragging her down in to the moonless night of his soul, because of what he was, the weight of the curse lain heavy upon his shoulders. She was a creature of the day, contrasting to the fact that everything in his life was about darkness: The darkness of windowless rooms, of the black pit of emotionless eyes, the stench of fear and blood, and the bitter flavor of revulsion.

Worse yet, he feared that if he gave it all to her - not just the truth, of which she knew most of it but the whole of his emotions, the fact that he loved her - he feared that she'd try to reach across that chasm, anyway. That she'd change herself to be the twilight, in her efforts keep her friendship with him. He was frightened that she'd change herself so much that he wouldn't recognize her any more, wouldn't be able to bask in the warmth that he'd come to need so very much.
