snarky_kat, your "fluff" my dear...
FF7, Cloud/Aerith
Smiles don't come easily to him, just as joy doesn't come easily to him. His heart is too battered by Nibelheim, by casual cruelty, to feel that emotion - no, to allow himself to feel that emotion. So the few times that his lips do curve like other people smile, the expression is often bittersweet, and the emotion behind it is self-mocking, distrustful. Cats smile more often than Cloud Strife.
But there is something about her, a goddess posing as a flower girl, that hooks onto his heartstrings and tugs gently. She awakens an emotion inside him that he'd forgotten he could reach, something warm like a light shining through the window of home, like the smell of bread or cookies right out of the oven. When she looks at him quietly, and the pink corners of her mouth tilt upwards, he feels like the sun has just broken the horizon, golden and filled with promise. Like her smile is their own private world, filled with peace and contentment.
Best of all is when they look at each other across the distance of the walkway, her happiness reaches inside him and something inside his own soul swells until it feels like he can't contain it for another moment. Then the smile he gives back to her isn't forced or sad at all - it's luminous with his unspoken emotions, transforming his fine-boned pale face into a thing of beauty. It's the same beauty that he sees in her, as he wraps his arms around her and announces that he's finally home.
